Oxfordshire Rural Broadband, a community initiative planning rollouts of wireless mesh Broadband technology across rural south-west Oxfordshire, are holding a public meeting to present their plans for the Clanfield, Filkins and Lechlade area.

The meeting, which is in Lechlade Town Hall at 8pm on the 18th November, will also provide residents of the area with an opportunity to discuss the options available given the recent announcements by BT of trigger levels for ADSL installation in the village.

Oxfordshire Rural Broadband are proposing an alternative system that is not tied to BT phone lines - in fact it is not tied to physical lines at all. It works using a self-healing network, or mesh, of low power wireless network access points. Subscribers will install a tiny antenna at their homes and will have access to broadband-speed Internet. One bonus of this system is that it also provides high speed local area networking between homes and businesses in the community area. Subscribers will be able to take advantage of speeds of up to 5Mbps for high-bandwidth applications like voice calls and gaming between premises within the Clanfield area.
